Being a proud vehicle owner comes with a slew of responsibilities, from maintaining the vehicle to keeping up with various costs. Your road tax is one such duty. Renewing your road taxes is mandatory by law, but the process can seem dizzying. Fret not! Paying your taxes need not be a taxing affair — read on to learn how it works.

Step 1: Meet your prerequisites

A month before your road tax expires, you will receive a reminder to renew it. The road tax can be renewed for 6 or 12 months.

Before you proceed to do so, ensure that you have met the following prerequisites at least 3 working days in advance:

  1. Clear outstanding fines or warrants from LTA, URA, HDB and Traffic Police
  2. Ensure that you have insurance coverage for the duration of your road tax. The insurance must cover third-party liability for deaths and bodily injury.
  3. If your vehicle is due for inspection, you must pass the vehicle inspection. If a vehicle inspection is due, you will receive notice of it 3 months before the road tax expires. Inspections are to be conducted by LTA-Authorised Inspection Centres.
  4. If you own a weekend car/off-peak car/revised off-peak car, inspect your vehicle number plate seals at LTA-Authorised Inspection Centres.
  5. If you own a heavy vehicle, ensure you have a valid vehicle parking certificate (VPC).

Step 2: Check how much to pay

Not sure how much road tax to pay? You can check using your vehicle’s registration number or its engine capacity and age.

Also keep in mind the following:

  • If your vehicle is older than 10 years, you must pay road tax surcharge in addition to your vehicle’s original road tax. This surcharge can be between 10 % to 50% of your road tax, depending on how old your vehicle is.
  • If you own a revised, off-peak car,

Step 3: Renew your road tax

Your road tax can easily be renewed through the following methods:

1. Online at OneMotoring

Available all day except between midnight and 1am.

2. AXS Services

Available all day except between midnight and 1am

3. GIRO

You will need to fill in and submit an application form to LTA. Once your application has been approved by your bank, you will be notified by LTA. Future road tax renewals will then be made via GIRO.

This process takes about a month, so be sure to do it much before your road tax is due.

4. Visit Road Tax Collection Centres or Singpost

If your road tax expires, you must pay late fees and cannot use the vehicle more than 14 days after the expiry. Doing so is an offence and can incur fines of up to $2000. You may also be charged in court for keeping an unlicensed vehicle.

Don’t delay your road tax renewal. Check prerequisites such as car insurance, and settle your road taxes smoothly.
